1. You are holding stocks that have risen in value. If your stocks are highly appreciated, you may find yourself with a hefty tax bill when it comes time to sell. By using these securities as a gift, you can avoid the capital gains tax on any paper profit.

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood: accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, or those battling cancer. To meet this constant demand, the Red Cross must collect about 12,000 units every day which then must be tested and packaged for safe transport to medical facilities around the country.

The Red Cross has accounts open at many of the large fund companies, which is necessary to initiate the transfer. However, we recommend that you email us at StockDonations@RedCross.org to confirm if an account number is available. It may be necessary for us to establish an account to accept transfers of shares. Some mutual fund companies take 3-6 weeks to process your gift.
